The garage is one of the most useful and functional areas of the home. From parking cars to storing seasonal decor, this space really does it all. But how do you keep it warm?

To avoid mold, condensation and burst pipes, it is important that the garage temperatures do not drop too much in winter. As our HVAC experts warn, there's no point in focusing on heating the space before addressing potential insulation issues.

Here, our pros reveal the best way to heat a garage (and they all agree) and provide tips for improving insulation. While you may know how to keep your garage cool in hot weather, it's important to do it right in the winter, too.

Our HVAC experts all agree when it comes to heating a garage efficiently using the best types of space heaters.

HVAC expert Veggeberg says, “For homeowners who want to heat their garage several times a month for short periods of time, we recommend an electric space heater, like the PELONIS PTH15A4BGB Ceramic Tower 1500W Indoor Space Heater with Oscillation, available on Amazon.”

The only case where you should opt for a more expensive solution is if you have converted your garage and therefore will be spending a lot of time in it.

Home remodeling expert Barres explains, “There's no point in putting so much effort into heating this space unless you're in the process of finishing it and spending a lot of time here, for example if you're turning it into a studio “But otherwise, a good space heater will meet all your needs.”

Keep in mind that garage conversions are actually home improvements that could devalue your property, as most homeowners want to purchase a property with a functional garage. Only tackle such projects if you are an accomplished DIYer who can bring it up to an acceptable standard or hire a handyman or professional contractor instead.

If you are running a space heater, avoid placing it on carpets or it may tip over, and keep it away from other objects to ensure adequate air circulation. Do not run unsupervised, never overnight and pay attention to moisture levels. If the value is too high, the space heater can become an electrical hazard in your home.

Don't neglect garage insulation

The best way to heat a garage is to use space heaters, but Rick Berres, owner of Honey-Doers, points out that there's no point in heating the garage at all if it's not properly insulated.

He says: “I always say that there's no point in heating the garage if you're making sure the warm air goes out of the cracks and the cold air comes in. So the first thing I want you to do is seal the cracks.” Save all the little things around the door – I know you have them! And only then can you think about heating.”

To make a garage winter-proof, first insulate the garage door with an insulation board, e.g. B. the FOAMULAR NGX F-250 2″ x 4' x 8' SSE R-10 XPS rigid foam board insulation available at Home Depot.

Then seal the gaps around doors and windows with caulk, such as: B. the DAP sealant 18152 available on Amazon, and sealing tape. You may also want to use spray insulation, such as the Great Stuff 99108824 Smart Dispenser Gaps & Cracks available on Amazon, suggests Max Veggeberg, CEO and founder of Tetra.

In extreme cases, if the damage cannot be repaired yourself, it is worth considering completely replacing the garage door or windows to reduce energy costs.

Combine these insulation solutions with curtain hacks for a warmer home in winter and heat-reflective insulation paint, recommends Francisco Fuenmayor, insured handyman at LocalProBook, for affordable, additional layers of insulation.

FAQs

Where do garages lose the most heat?

Your garage loses most of its heat through the garage door, which is why you need to find out about the cost of replacing a garage door if necessary. Of course, this is heavily influenced by size and material, but our expert guide goes into the details.

What temperature should a garage be in winter?

Similar to how you set your thermostat to a consistent temperature in your home during the winter, you should aim to do the same in your garage. But of course this doesn't have to be maintained at the same level of comfort. Instead, try to keep the temperature in your garage between 40 and 50°F and use a thermometer like the ThermoPro TP49 Digital Hygrometer Indoor Thermometer available on Amazon to keep a close eye on the temperature.

Are you having a hard time organizing a garage with too much stuff? To be successful, start by decluttering your space before investing in effective storage solutions.
