Redstone Arsenal, Ala. – Since new military construction projects build rooms for the military of tomorrow, some projects renovate historical army structures to continue to provide facilities for soldiers that serve today.
One example is a US Army Engineering and Support Center, the repair and renewal and renewal project of Huntsville, which renovated a barracks in the Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall (JBMHH) next to the Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia.
The project renovated an outdated, historical barracks (building 250), which contained members of the 3rd US infantry regiment, which traditionally as “The Old Guard” access to a facility with 13,000 square meters of living rooms for soldiers and 6,700 square meters of basement is known for administrative and mission support functions.
The old guard is the official ceremonial unit of the army and Eskort to become president and offers security for Washington, DC, in punctual emergency or civil disorder.
One of the oldest installations in the army, the mission of the common basis of Myer-Henderson Hall, also known as America's Post, formerly known as Fort Myer, is the support of the Military District of the US Army of Washington (MDW) and the joint capital of the task Force national region.
Building 250 was built in 1908 and is one of the oldest structures that are still on the installation. The building was not an option because the barracks were listed on a national historical landmark in 1972 and is a building that contributes to the historic Fort Myer district.
However, the JBMHH directorate for public work stated that renovations and smaller construction work through the multiple award Task Order Contract (Matoc).
The MATOC offers a design building vehicle for a quick reaction to repair, renovation, conversion, changes, additions, minor milcon construction, procurement/ installation and commissioning of facilities, order operation at state locations worldwide.
When renovating a federal building listed in the National Historic Register, significant changes must be made in order to protect the historical character of the building. Treatment of historical properties that prioritize the preservation of original materials and characteristics and at the same time enable the necessary functional updates.
Joseph Abrego, FRR project manager, said that the historical importance of the building added an additional level to the design test.
“The proposed design required the approval of the state historical conservation office to ensure that the architectural elements have retained the original aesthetics that included the repair and exchange of windows and the prominent white columns on the front facade,” said Abrego.
“It (coordination) can have a headache, but we were lucky that it went smoothly and pretty quickly.”
The contract of 7.6 million US dollars included the refinancing of interior and external architectural features and building systems for sustainability. According to Abrego, there were several construction systems and there were Dalkslücks that worsened the structure.
Abrego said the renovation included mold renovation, roof repairs, HLK repairs and general repair of architectural elements and random objects as required.
“The project goal was to maintain the facility, which it excited for a standard in which soldiers who were assigned to the old guard were possible,” said Abrego.
“Our goal was to restore the functionality and security of the historical building and at the same time improve the aesthetics of the soldiers, which B250 described at home.”
Richard Lafreniere, JBMHHHHH HHH, said that the work to upgrade and maintain the building helps to maintain a unique feeling of location in the JBMHH community.
“The Huntsville Center successfully completed the renovation of this historical facility according to historical maintenance requirements,” he said.
