The Midland Historical Society is organizing tours to commemorate renovation projects to the house.
Midland, Texas-Das Brown-Dorsey House is the oldest house in Midland and the only remaining house of the Victorian period.
The house was built in 1899 less than two decades after the city was founded and owned by Zachary Taylor Brown and Sarah Dorsey, father and daughter members of one of the original prominent Catholic families in the city.
Understandably, the house saw better days in view of its age. But that changed earlier and to celebrate the Midland Historical Society (MHS) today, gave the public free tours through the house.
“We give people the opportunity to step down over 120 more than 120 years to learn how Midland returned in the oldest house in Midland,” said MHS President Jim Collett.
The house recently completed a renovation project of 300,000 US dollars on the outside of the house. In order to put things in the right light, each window alone cost $ 4,200 and the house has twenty-two windows. This happens after numerous restoration efforts to maintain the house over the decades through MHS, including a selection of the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
“I think you are a bit impoverished without your story. Or you think 'it was always like that “or” It's always that, “says Collett.” This gives you the opportunity to recognize … how people have lived through time and how things are different, but they too will recognize how things are familiar. And … I think that's important ”.
With the renovation work that has now been completed and a number of new volunteers who are willing to help and offer tours, MHS, tours – originally only by appointment and special events – hopes to make a more regular event. They hope to present a new side from Midland to teach newer generations what the city looked like and how their ancestors lived.
