For the first time since some minor renovations about 18 years ago, child nutrition workers at Benton Heights Elementary School for the Arts will prepare meals in a new kitchen.
Shortly before the Christmas holidays, workers began remodeling the kitchen. Benton Heights is a year-round school and the holidays began on December 17th. Students return on January 7th.
“(We) are working on the kitchen and have a brand new serving area for the students,” says John, child nutrition supervisor Arrowood said.
Currently, Benton Heights is the only school being remodeled.
“The school is very old and there hasn’t been any rework done on the kitchen (since the small renovation about 18 years ago), but that would be pretty big in comparison.” Arrowood said.
Benton Heights celebrated its 100th anniversary this year.
The distribution area will be completed by the time students return on January 7th. The food is prepared by Walter Bickett Education center and delivered to Benton Heights for meals. There will be a limited menu selection until the renovation is complete.
The entire renovation is expected to be completed during spring break, the first week of April.
“It looks wonderful” Arrowood said. “We're just going to clean up a little bit and get our staff here to make sure everything is be fit to get started first thing next Monday.
“It will look shiny and new to (the students).” Arrowood said.
