The European Defense Agency (EDA) has launched a new research project to monitor and predict the health of batteries in aircraft, which are known as a forecast Health Management (PHM).

The project is known as a battage that combines “batt” from batteries and refers to “age” and relates to the lifespan of the battery. Under the direction of Italy and the participation of Belgium, Greece, the Netherlands and Germany, the three-year project focuses on a kind of rechargeable battery, which is called in aircraft, which are referred to as structural Li-ion/PO batteries.

In contrast to conventional batteries, structure batteries not only save energy, but also help to support the structure of the aircraft, which can reduce the total weight. This is particularly important for aircraft, since every kilogram of kilogram helps to improve fuel efficiency and performance.

The project aims to develop aircraft power systems, whereby the focus on hybrid aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVS) is defensive to support a longer lifespan and high performance. The systems will predict how long the batteries and materials can be used safely, which reduces the risk of failure.

The aim of the project includes the design of the Sensor network and the battery management system, the implementation of the diagnostic and prognostic algorithm to recognize early anomaly, the experimental validation under realistic operating conditions and extension of the methods from the test to the validation of full UAV component level.

The project combines the expertise and test facilities of the Member States to accelerate innovations and share the costs.

“The project is intended to create the basis for research results that can be used for both civil aircraft and the automotive industry and increase the possibility of broad application of the developed technologies,” said the EDA.
