Huntington Community repairs volunteer fire roof for free

Huntington, Texas (KTRE) – Like every firefighter, the volunteer firefighters at Huntington VfD would be the first people who bump into burning buildings when life is at risk.

“We don't look at ourselves first. We are happy to take care of the people first,” said Mike Wolfe, head of Huntington VfD.

Now the community, the HVFD, wants to pay it back.

The roof in the department is far beyond its lifespan. Therefore, Huntington Rooder Michael Paxton, together with the help of the city, wants to repair the roof of the VfD free of charge.

“We are always looking for an opportunity to return something. The golden rule is when you see a broken window, fix it,” said Paxton.

Paxton says red is what the roof killed and a new dignity of repairing the VfD cost over 20,000 US dollars.

This is a lot of money for a department that reduces volunteers and donations.

“This is one of the reasons why we have to use all the money that we bring into the vehicles in order to keep them running on the building,” said Wolfe.

After more than 20 years in which he worked under the same roof, Wolfe says that it is difficult to ignore the elephant in the room.

“On an early morning about 2 or 3 a.m., a tree fell onto a powerline and started a large brush fire. We come here and our brushcar, a large piece of roof came and excluded the windshield so that we could not take this truck,” said Wolfe.

Paxton brought the city of Huntington to donate over 2,000 US dollars for the project, whereby ABC supply of Lufkin donated the materials.

After a day of the demo, Huntington VfD's roof is new and improves.

“Huntington was pretty good for us. People like Mike Paxton who comes in and helps is huge,” said Wolfe.

According to the Paxton, the new roof of the department should last at least another 20 years.
