KANSAS (KOAM) – The Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office is reminding people to keep fire safety in mind as they celebrate the holidays.

According to the Kansas State Fire Marshal's Office, fire departments respond to nearly 1,000 house fires that start with Christmas decorations.

Christmas Decoration Safety Tips:

  • Choose decorations that are flame retardant or flame retardant.
  • Check your lighting to make sure there are no damaged cords or bulbs.
  • Remove outdoor lighting after vacation to avoid excessive wear or damage.
  • Consider switching to LED lights that don't emit heat.
  • Never leave your lights on overnight or when you are not at home.
  • Keep candles away from burning things.
  • If you use a natural tree, opt for fresh, green needles that won't fall off when touched.
  • Make sure the tree is away from heat sources, including heating vents.
  • Make sure the tree isn't blocking an exit.

Safety tips for Christmas cooking:

  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking or set a timer to remind yourself to check things.
  • Keep items away from the stove.
  • Make sure smoke detectors are installed and working.
