Northerly Island Visitor Center will be opened again after 2023 Blaze and offer new outdoor programs

The Northerly Island Visitor Center was reopened on Monday, almost a year and a half after the end of a fire in November 2023.

The lobby has been completely restored and the windows with bird collision film were replaced, the Chicago Park District said. The former Meigs field terminal structure also received electrical and illuminated upgrades.

The building had been called and closed since November 28, 2023, when firefighters took a fire.

A fire on Sunday in the northern visitor center of the island forced an office of the City Harbor Agency in the building. In an earlier incarnation, the building was used as a hangar on Meigs Field.

“I am very grateful to the public for your patience during the restoration process and our team for reactivating this community asset, which offers more access to natural-based programming options,” said Carlos Ramirez-Rosa, General Superintendent and CEO of the Chicago Park District.

The visitor center is open from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Annual programs such as family fishing and bird observation are available for all bird walks as well as a new fly fishing program in May and June as well as the return of Camping Gear Library at Chicago Park District in July.
