The Nagercoil Municipal Corporation will restore the city's major parks, which have not undergone rehabilitation in recent years.
The company has submitted a proposal for restoration and establishment of a science center at Sir CP Ramasamy Iyer Memorial Park at Veppamoodu Junction and development of a new park at Semmankulam on Avvai Shanmugam Road in Nagercoil.
Semmankulam, spread over 40 hectares, has been severely damaged in recent years due to sewage contamination and water hyacinth growth. Residents and environmental activists have repeatedly spoken out about the need to protect and restore the body of water.
In response, a surveillance team from Kanniyakumari district visited the site. Following the visit, an assessment for a renovation plan with an estimated cost of ₹10 crore was prepared and submitted to the state government.
Nagercoil Corporation Mayor R Mahesh said the project aims to transform the area into a small picnic destination for the public. The park would be designed around the body of water, with an island structure created in the middle for visitors. A bamboo bridge would be built to connect the shore to the island.
A detailed project report (DPR) has been submitted for both the projects, he said, warning of strict action against those who discharge wastewater into the tank. Residents have been advised to install drainage systems to prevent sewage from flowing into the tank, he added.
