At its regular board meeting last Tuesday, the school authority of Miami-Dade County awarded a project of $ 26.6 million to HA contracting corp. For the comprehensive upgrade and renovation of Dr. Frederica S. Wilson/Skyway Elementary School, which will become the first net-zero energy school of the district.
Frederica S. Wilson Skyway Elementary was built in 1972 and consists of five permanent buildings and covered sidewalks, which have exceeded 76,737 square foot to about eight acres. The current facility offers student stations for 588 students and operates the grades before eighth grade.
The scope of this project includes the demolition and exchange of buildings 1. The new 36,000 square meter, high-performance building will accommodate 400 student stations and contain modern art and music laboratories, administrative offices and a media center. Extensive renovations for buildings 4 are carried out, including high -performance -HHLK systems, new LED lighting, electrical cooking devices and new outer color.
Many sustainable design strategies have been installed in order to achieve net-zero energy and green/sustainable furnishings, which includes optimal building orientation, high-performance buildings and HLK systems, insulated glazing with low-e, water storage and other energy-efficient features.
These measures at the school are intended to achieve a campus-wide energy consumption intensity (Eui) of 29.7, with the new classroom achieving an impressive Eui of around 20, which is significantly better than the national K-8 average of approx. 56. Eui indicates how much energy a building per square foot per year consumes.
In addition to the energy -oriented upgrades, the project will also include a new parking lot, new tennis courts, Puting Green and an improved basketball court.
In order to ensure the long-term integrity of the net-zero energy status, the project post-construction services such as the guarantees and maintenance services from the extended manufacturer, an online dashboard/programming hosting for NET-NULL and a comprehensive measurement and review reporting system.
The expected final date of the project is September 2026.
