Salt Lake City -An football in Utah this weekend will be its most played opponent from the state in program history: the Wyoming Cowboys compete.
The utes and cowboys played 81 times, from 1904. This is the third highest games against an opponent who was only in Utah State and BYU.
The last time the schools met, was 15 years ago in October 2010. Before this meeting, they were the longest in the 1930s without corresponding.
The last meeting
On October 16, 2010, football in Utah traveled to Laramie to face Wyoming as a conference opponent for the last time. The UTes would join the PAC-12 conference in the following season.
In the game, Quarterback Jordan Wynn threw 230 yards and two touchdowns, and Matt Asiana hurried for 109 yards, and both Eddie Wide and Reggie Dunn hit the floor in TDS.
The 30-6 victory kept Utah undefeated at 6: 0. The utes ended this season with a record of 10: 3, were occupied in the coaches survey in 23rd place and played Boise State in the Maaco Bowl.

Utah vs. Wyoming: Complete timeline of Matchups
Early independent matchups
The University of Utah was not a conference member of the first matchup of schools in 1904 to 1909.
Utah and Wyoming played three times during this time, with the UTes win all three in shutouts. 23-0 in 1904, 31-0 in 1905 and 75-0 in 1908.
At that time, Joe Maddock was Utah's head coach. His stay was the first success of the program that went 28-9-1 before retiring in 1910.
Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference era
Utah joined the RMAC in 1910, which was known at the time as Rocky Mountain faculty -Athletic Conference. Wyoming planned games against schools in the conference, but only became an official member in 1921. From then on, both schools stayed at the conference until 1937.
During this time, the cowboys were still unable to survive Utah, and the utes won 10 of the 11 games. In 1920 they played 0-0 in SLC.
From 1910 to 1924 Utah had three head coaches – Fred Bennion, Nelson Norgren and Thomas Fitzpatrick – each after. The UTes won their first conference championship under Fitzpatrick in 1922.
Ike Armstrong took over in 1925 and was the head coach of Utah until 1949. Under Armstrong had a record of 141-55-15 and won 13 conference championships. This includes six in a row from 1928 to 1933 in the RMFAC.
Conference -era of the mountain states
In 1937 Utah, Wyoming and five other schools left the RMFAC to create the MSC, which is also known as a skyline conference.
The utes and cowboys played 21 more games during this time, and Wyoming was finally able to make the games competitive. They won their first game in 1949 and won nine of the next 13 games.
Nevertheless, Utah held the upper hand with a 12: 9 record against Wyoming in the skyline.
At the end of this era, the utes had two coaching changes. Jack “Cactus” Curtice trained from 1950 to 1957, Ray Nagel took over in 1958 and trained Utah in his next conference.
Western Athletic Conference -era
Similar to almost three decades earlier, Utah, Wyoming and four other schools left their respective conferences in 1962 to form the WAC.
Every time the utes and cowboys played their most games against each other in the WAC. The 35 games were even in every era and actually saw that Wyoming received the advantage in Utah for the first time. The cowboys won 20 of the games, including a series of five wins and two strips of three wins.
From 1973 to 1985 the schools acted victories every year.
After Nagel resigned in 1965, Utah Football was unable to keep a head coach for more than five years. Mike Giddings, Bill Meek, Tom Lovat, Wayne Howard, Chuck Stobart and Jim Fassel surpassed the torch over a period of 25 years.
After all, the UTES found the man who implemented the program in 1990. Ron McBride.
Mountain West Conference -era
For the last time Utah and Wyoming jumped the ship and create a new conference, the mountain vests.
After McBride had led to several Bowl game appearances and profit seasons in the 1990s, Urban Meyer and Kyle Whittingham was replaced, and the Uts quickly rose to a national brand.
During this period, Utah gained control of the series against Wyoming and won eight of the ten matchups before he came to the PAC-12 in 2011.
During this time, Kyle Whitingham's father Fred trained with him in the early 2000s. Fred Whitingham's pants caught fire in a game against the cowboys on the sidelines, a moment when Kyle Whitingham thought before the game in 2025.
What is Utah football against Wyoming?
In more than a century of games and four different conferences, Utah has the advantage of all time compared to Wyoming of all time and gains 49 of the 81 matchups.
The UTes are 31-12-1 in Salt Lake City and 18-19 in Laramie.
The game of 2025 week three is not just the first game between schools in 15 years. It is the first time that they have been members of various conferences since 1920.
