The restoration of Dorset Heathland aims to reduce the risk of forest fire

During the restoration, selected trees and invasive types such as Rhododendron are removed so that local heather plants – especially heather – can thrive.

The removed wood is used for construction, fence posts and Wood chip for energy generation.

The chairman of the Dorset Council, Nick Ireland, said: “As depot banks of a significant part of the remaining lowlands in the world, we are the responsibility to restore and protect these habitats.

“Heathlands not only support rare species, but also play a role in combating climate change.

“And since climate change makes more frequent and more intensive forest fires, it is more important than ever that we carefully manage these landscapes.”

The project is supported by the financing of Natural England and the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
