Raleigh, NC (WTVD) – The city of Raleigh joins efforts to protect wandering birds by leaving light.

Millions of birds travel every spring and autumn through North Carolina, mainly under the lid of darkness. Light lights can subsequently distract migrating birds and lead to collisions with buildings. These bird populations have decreased seriously.

From September 10 to November 30th, all non -essential lighting in urban institutions will be switched off between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., which will also help reduce energy consumption, to support Raleigh's sustainability goals and to support the city's climate action plan.

Here are some recommendations from Audubon North Carolina to make heaven darker during the migration period:

  • Switch off the lights outside of your house, especially upwards.
  • Close the blinds and curtains at home and before you leave your office for the day.
  • If you work in an office building, ask your employer to get out of the outside upwards and interior design lights from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Raleigh participates twice a year in “Lights out for bird hike”.
