PHOENIX – – A Phoenix ice rink was badly damaged after the storms on September 27th.
What we know:
The AZ ICE Arcadia Rink in the center of Phoenix is closed when the officials strive to carry out repairs and force games and exercises that are put on hold.
The ice rink, which is near the corner of 38th street and Thomas Roadmade a serious shot of mother nature on Saturday evening when strong winds damaged the building and started a fire.
It could take weeks before repairing the building.
They deeper:
Cleaning continues in the arena after the strong storm has seriously damaged the large concrete building.
“The first thing that happened in the building was that the roof was torn down by the microburst in the area,” said General Manager Jim Curley.
Curley gave a tour of the damage, which contained very few work lights and debris that covered the ice itself. In the changing rooms on the upper floor, a hole was beaten through the roof right next to an electric fire. Dust and debris also fell from the ceiling to everything below.
“We have just tried to collect the pieces as we find out what the next step is,” said Curley.
A drone that looked over the building showed a huge part of the roof that separated and hardly attached. The building's satellite dish was also thrown on the roof of the building next door.
“We worked with all other companies in the city to find as much ice age as possible for everyone. That was a little challenge, while we also try to eliminate the damage and repair,” said Curley.
Big Picture View:
The ice rink is used by several youth teams and the Grand Canyon University Club teams. Curley said the ice rink was not a cash cow, so they look for money to get money back on the ice as soon as possible.
“It is a big cost of the building that we don't have, but we don't do it for the money,” said Curley. “We do it for the community, for the children, and they know that this is really the final goal.”
What's next:
Curley hopes to have training in the coming days, but the complete repair job can take several weeks. Damage estimates achieve almost 1 million US dollars.
