The Manipur government stops work on the historic Rajbari in Shillong and carries out the restoration adhering to strict heritage guidelines

The Government of Manipur has updated on the current status of restoration of the historic Rajbari building in Shillong and emphasized that all work has been temporarily halted to ensure proper conservation of the heritage site.

The Rajbari, a site closely linked to the state's history, was found to be structurally weak due to weather and termite damage. Recognizing its historical significance, the government initiated a comprehensive project for “Infrastructure Development of Heritage Complex, Rajbari, Shillong” in 2022.

A Detailed Project Report (DPR) was prepared by the Planning and Development Authority (PDA), Manipur and submitted to the North Eastern Council (NEC), which approved it in July 2023. The DPR included two components: the construction of a guest house and the reconstruction/restoration of the exhibition hall and gallery.

M/S Meitei Construction Ltd was awarded both contracts in 2023. Work on the guesthouse began in April 2024 and is nearing completion. This was followed by the restoration of the exhibition hall and gallery, starting with the dismantling of a fragile part.

Officials noted that further inspection revealed a risk of total collapse due to the instability of the remaining structure. The entire building was then carefully dismantled by hand. Reusable materials such as wooden doors, windows and wall panels were properly stored and the old structure was fully documented with photos and videos.

To ensure restoration true to the original, a monitoring and monitoring committee was set up. The committee will oversee the reconstruction in accordance with the original architectural designs, dimensions and historical features, using salvaged materials wherever possible. Historic preservation experts may also be brought in to protect the aesthetic integrity and heritage value of the structure.

The Joint Secretary (GAD) of the Government of Manipur emphasized that the project aims to preserve the historical identity of the Rajbari for future generations.
