CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Corpus Christi Animal Care Services is getting a major facelift as part of the city's mid-year budget adjustment, with construction aimed at improving comfort for animals and staff.
City officials said five roofs have already been replaced throughout the facility and that installation of a new HVAC system at Kennel Three will begin in February. This area includes two separate sections, one with 20 kennels and another quarantine area with 20 more.
Mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades to the administration building are also planned starting in January.
Kathleen Chapa, director of animal care services, said the improvements are part of a pilot program approved by the City Council earlier this year.
“This is a pilot program that has been approved by the City Council, and so we are working with the designers, the contractors and our engineers and implementing it,” Chapa said. “If it works the way we want it to, we will hopefully ask for funds to install more air conditioning systems in the future.”
In addition to the improvements, Animal Care Services is actively recruiting volunteers and foster families to help more pets find homes. To celebrate the improvements and encourage adoptions, the shelter is hosting a free adoption event on Halloween evening.
