Buffalo is preparing for the Christmas season, the annual tree lighting ceremony

It's almost time for one of the most magical evenings of the year in Buffalo. The annual tree lighting ceremony will be held on December 6th at the Fountain Plaza.

BUFFALO, NY – It will soon look like Christmas in downtown Buffalo as the city prepares for the annual tree lighting ceremony Dec. 6 at Fountain Plaza.

Festivities begin at 5:00 p.m. that day with free ice skating at the Rotary Rink. You can bring your own skates or rent them on site. It costs $2 for children and $3 for adults.

The tree will be lit at 6 p.m. followed by fireworks.

Families can then enjoy visits with Santa, holiday activities and train rides for children.

“In partnership with the City of Buffalo, Buffalo Place has been proud to lead the operation of this outdoor ice skating rink for 27 years. The revitalized Fountain Plaza public space provides residents and visitors with a festive and inviting winter destination to enjoy all season long,” said Michael T. Schmand, CEO of Buffalo Place Inc., in a statement.

Meanwhile, New York City is gearing up for its own iconic Christmas display as this year's Rockefeller Center Christmas tree makes its journey to Manhattan. Crews cut down the 75-foot-tall Norway spruce near Albany on Thursday morning.

The 45-foot-wide and approximately 11-ton tree is expected to arrive in New York City on Saturday.

Once in place, the tree is erected, decorated and prepared for the annual lighting ceremony on December 3rd. After the holidays, authorities say the massive spruce will be recycled into lumber and donated to Habitat for Humanity.
