“You couldn’t pay me $8.9 million to live here.”

A Redditor shared photos of a house for sale to the r/McMansionHell community and it was so outrageous that the user had to assure other Redditors that it was real.

“5 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, an $8.9 million monstrosity,” they wrote above pictures of the home, “$8.9 million home in Victoria, BC, no joke.”

You really have to see it to believe it.

You really have to see it to believe it.

The photos show unnecessarily large and strange rooms, including at least two of the 12 bathrooms. The house also apparently has four kitchens. It's so absurd that many commentators thought it might not have been built as a private home.

Purpose and design choices aside, houses like this are incredibly lavish. The production and use of materials such as cement, steel and aluminum have a huge carbon footprint. According to the UN Environment Program, the construction sector is the biggest contributor to the toxic gases that are overheating our planet and is responsible for 37% of global pollution.

This also does not cover the environmental pollution caused by the transport of the materials and the waste generated by the leftover materials. Once the houses are built, they require an enormous amount of energy – most of which probably comes from dirty energy sources – for power, heating and cooling. Not to mention the amount of water that twelve bathrooms and four kitchens could use.

While the landscaping was apparently ongoing at the time of this post, other McMansions have been criticized for their vast monoculture lawns, which require enormous amounts of water and toxic chemicals to maintain.

All of this results in a carbon footprint larger than the floor plan. Multiply that by the growing number of McMansions, and the huge houses create an even bigger problem. Fortunately, others are building passive houses or other eco-friendly homes that take their impact on the environment into consideration.

With over 400 comments, users had a lot to say about the house.
