Habitat for Humanity opens ReStore in Bowling Green

The ReStore plans to open its doors on Jan. 23 at 829 W. Newton Road in Bowling Green. Sales will help the nonprofit build more homes each year.

TOLEDO, Ohio – Wood County Habitat for Humanity will open its doors to a ReStore in Bowling Green in less than a month.

The store — one of the nonprofit's hardware stores and donation centers that offers new and gently used furniture, appliances, housewares, building materials and more with the goal of reducing waste — is already packed with items for community members to purchase in January. 23.

Wood County Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Mark Ohashi said the money raised will help fund the nonprofit's mission to build homes.

“If we look at our strategic plan for the next few years, we are building two to three houses a year,” Ohashi said. “Now that ReStore’s profits are growing and we can put those profits into the mission, we hope to build five houses by year five, so five houses in five years.”

Robin Swanson, the store's manager, said Habitat for Humanity hopes to do $300,000 in sales at the new location this year.

“When I heard about this opportunity to do something good for my local community, it really got me excited,” Swanson said.

Swanson added that the store has received a lot of donations and help from the community, including Bowling Green State University students, to prepare the store for opening day.

“What we've gotten so far has been pretty high-quality furniture, and then we've had a whole lot of hardware and other things donated by local businesses, so I would say our biggest need for donations right now is for building materials,” Swanson said.

The store, located at 829 W. Newton Road in Bowling Green, is open to the public Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m

“Opening the ReStore will allow us to tap into and engage a whole new world of volunteers,” Ohashi said. “One of our big goals is that we want to be a place where volunteers can stay active and have fellowship with each other, spend time and do something meaningful and worthwhile, and we believe ReStore is exactly that.”
