Ahlstrom has introduced Ahlstrom PurXcel, a new molecular filter media platform designed for clean air applications worldwide. Manufactured in Turin, Italy using advanced drying technology, PurXcel ensures cleaner, healthier air in cabins and indoor spaces. Indoor air can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air, while people spend about 90% of their time indoors. This highlights the importance of high performance filtration in enclosed spaces, including vehicles.
To meet these low pressure drop requirements in electric and premium vehicles, Ahlstrom has developed PurXcel, a high performance solution that combines optimized carbon loading and low pressure drop. The media can be configured as a combination media to remove both gaseous pollutants and particulates in a single filter element. Its multiple adsorption layers can be tailored to specific pollutants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and inorganic gases such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ammonia and odors. A wide range of particle efficiency layers are available – up to HEPA13 – to meet even the most stringent air quality requirements.
The excellent foldability and cohesion of the filter media enable higher processing efficiency, simplified filter manufacturing and waste reduction. Additionally, the optimized internal structure supports a compact design and whisper-quiet operation – ideal for space and noise sensitive environments such as electric vehicles and premium cabins.
“PurXcel embodies Ahlstrom’s DNA of innovation and our commitment to cleaning and protecting every fiber,” says Giuseppe Costa, VP Global Filtration. “Beyond the cabin air intake, this versatile platform can be adapted to HVAC systems, fuel cell air intakes and personal protective devices, meeting the evolving needs of various industries.”
