Arcata offers zero-waste tips to celebrate more and buy less

This is a press release from the City of Arcata:

City of ArcataThe City of Arcata would like to encourage everyone to adopt zero-waste and low-waste strategies to reduce their consumption and waste this holiday season.

According to the Center for Biological Diversity, Americans generate 23% more waste in December than any other month, which amounts to an additional 5.8 million tons of waste. To counteract this flood of waste, we should celebrate more and buy less during the holidays!

The city's Environmental Services Department has some zero- and low-waste tips to reduce holiday waste, support local businesses and create meaningful memories:

  • Experience gifts: Give the gift of a membership, subscription, or “experience” like concert tickets, a spa package, yoga classes, or a gift card to a local restaurant. Arcata Recreation offers a variety of activity classes that make great holiday gifts. Gift certificates are available at the city's recreation department and the recipient can choose which course they would like to take. For more information, visit cityofarcata.org/430/Gift-Cards.
  • Support local businesses: Shopping from local artisans, craft fairs, or small shops supports the local economy and helps reduce the carbon footprint associated with shipping and packaging. For great gifts, visit the Holiday Craft Market at the Arcata Community Center on Saturday, December 14th and Sunday, December 15th!
  • Second hand shopping: Thrift stores are great places to find unique gifts with a story, such as vintage items, used clothing, or old board games.
  • Reusable everyday items: Gift practical items that encourage more sustainable everyday habits, like reusable water bottles, shopping bags, lunch containers and bamboo cutlery sets.
  • Repurposing and remodeling: Neat books, jewelry or even home accessories could be perfect gifts if they are tidy and carefully presented.
  • Reusable and homemade packaging: Opt for reusable gift bags, baskets, boxes or fabrics like scarves or tea towels. This creates a zero-waste packaging tradition that can be used year after year. Old newspapers, cards, posters or calendars can also be fun and unique packaging materials. Make sure to compost or recycle the packaging appropriately.
  • Seasonal decorations: Decorate with natural elements such as pine cones, holly or evergreen branches. Instead of buying plastic Christmas decorations and wreaths, use natural materials such as wood, dried flowers or leaf prints. Seasonal fruits and vegetables like pumpkin or apples can also serve as eco-friendly, reusable centerpieces. These decorations can be composted after the celebration.
  • Energy efficient lighting: Use LED lights and set them on a timer. Consider using solar-powered outdoor lights as an even more environmentally friendly option.
  • Plan meals and leftovers: Estimate the number of guests and plan the meal in advance to avoid buying too much food. Ask guests to bring containers for leftovers to reduce food waste.
  • Local and seasonal foods: Support local farmers and buy seasonal produce. Plan your meals based on what's available in the area to ensure fresh, sustainable ingredients.
  • Reusable tableware: Use reusable plates, glasses, cutlery and cloth napkins to reduce disposable items. Borrowing tableware sets or glasses from friends is a good option if there aren't enough at home.
  • Donation and reuse: Repurpose or donate unbroken or unused items. Many local charities accept gently used Christmas decorations, toys and clothing.
  • Recycling and composting: Ensure you sort recyclables properly by following Recology Arcata's curbside recycling guidelines, available at recology.com/recology-arcata/sorting-guides. Compost food scraps and natural, biodegradable items. For more information about what and where can be recycled, visit cityofarcata.org/313/Recycling-Garbage.
