Wildfire smoke can enter homes and buildings and significantly impact indoor air quality. The fine particles in smoke can irritate the respiratory system, aggravate pre-existing health conditions and pose an increased risk to vulnerable groups, including children, seniors and those with respiratory or heart disease.

Tips for promoting healthier indoor air quality during and after wildfires

  • Circulate indoor air: Use forced air to limit the entry of dangerous pollutants into your home or building. Reduce the supply of fresh air through ventilation to prevent bad outside air from entering. Always remember to follow local instructions and expert recommendations.
  • Maximize HVAC Filtration: If you have a standalone HVAC system with a high-efficiency filter, put it in fan mode to increase air circulation and capture particles flowing through the HVAC system.
  • Improve filtering: Install at least a MERV 13 or higher filtration system and use appropriately sized indoor air purifiers with HEPA small particle filtration and activated carbon to minimize odors.
  • Maintain air filter: Clean or replace the HVAC filters according to the manufacturer's recommendations. High-quality air filters trap smoke-related particles and accumulation can affect system efficiency and reliability.
  • Limit smoke intrusion: Weatherproof doors and windows by caulking and caulking cracks before wildfire season. Keep doors and windows closed to minimize smoke entry.
