Drew County Historical Society awarded Grant for Garvin Cavaness House Restoration - Deltaplex News

The Arkansa's Historic Preservation Program has awarded the Drew County Historical Society with a unanimous grant of $ 41,603 to support the restoration of external windows in the historic Garvin Cavaness House.

The restoration project with estimated costs of 62,404 US dollars will concentrate on the preservation of the integrity of the structure, which serves as a House Museum for Historical Society. The funding financing comes from the Historic Preservation Restoration Grant Fund, which is supported by the Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council.

Clements & Associates / Architecture created the grant application and offers architectural services for the restoration. The Garvin Cavaness House, built in 1916, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is considered an important part of Drew County's cultural and architectural heritage.

Garvin Cavaness, for which the house was named, was a descendant of families who were involved in the development of Monticello and Drew County. The local folklore contributes to the unique character of the house, with stories that the handmade concrete blocks used on the outside were made with cement from a derailment by Iron Mountain Railroad.

Architecturally, the building shows elements of both classic and colonial styles that are typical of its era and reflect the southern design of the early 20th century.
