Energy-efficient Marvin windows offer natural ventilation, flooding the interiors in daylight and frame a frame of a reflective view of the surrounding boreal forest.

IF You are looking for your next autumn short vacation. Take a look at Ski Hill Cabins & Saunas: a cozy retreat that consists of four modern cabins, each with its own colored private sauna, which is hidden in the private and picturesque community of Luts.

The owners Patrick Kindler and McCabe Plaas, both Twin Cities-Born, found the inspiration for the unique rental property from an A-Frame chalet from 1968, which Kindler discovered in Luts and bought a holiday home in 2012. After moving there in 2012.

“They didn't want to create another Knotty Pine cabin to the north,” explains the architect Carl Gauley from Grayspace Architecture, who designed the cabins and saunas. “They wanted to create something that would stand out from all the other apartments that they find up there.”

The living room was heated by a small gas stove with a view of the forested property by floor -to -ceiling windows and has sufficient seating for guests.

Inspired by traditional Scandinavian villages, Gauley grouped the 1,200 square meters of cabins together to create a minimal footprint that increases them on concrete pillars to take them into account
The sloping topography and the annual snowfall of the website. The cedar cladding and corrugated iron metal cladding form the outdoor areas, while the interiors have energy-efficient Marvin windows and durable, low-maintenance surfaces.

Each cabin beats up to 10 people and includes a fully equipped kitchen, living and dining areas, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a loft area, a private fireplace and a Nordic sauna with a changing room. The kitchen baking splashes are colored to meet the sauna side buildings appointed by the cabins, while CNC-cut-plywood accents ensure visual interest. “The railing balances and shape of the loft,” explains Gauley. “Equipped from a single plywood, it is structurally so good, but also light and playful.”

The interiors of the cabins are light, light, simple and stylish with globe lighting, minimal hardware, slender cupboards and colorful kitchen baking splashes that correspond to the separate sauna.

Subtle shifts in the position maximize the connection of the cabins to nature and at the same time help create a thoughtful level of privacy between neighboring structures. Gauley says: “It really feels like a small village that is hidden in the forest.”

In order to strategically differentiate public and private areas, each cabin has a private wing in which the main bedroom is offered with a break from the hustle and bustle of the main living area, while a series of stairs in the conductor style leads to a cozy loft area with an additional sleeping area.
