A fire broke out on the roof of the Fort Myers High School high school and causes concern among parents and students.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening at around 7 p.m. during the ongoing roof work, but luckily no students or employees were present at that time.
The headmaster Sam Fisher expressed relief about the situation and explained that it could have been much worse. He confirmed that firefighters deleted the fire in just 11 minutes and the construction project has not yet been completed.
“Fortunately, there were no students or employees in the building at the time,” said Fisher.
The parents received a voiceemail that informed them about the fire, which was associated with roof work that was previously carried out that day.
Students and employees had to adapt because sports and health courses are temporarily resettled.
“We hear the pony while working on the roof,” said Samuel Salamanca, a student of Fort Myers High School.
Advanced Daching and Blech, the contractor responsible for roof work, refused to comment on the investigation. However, parents like Kim Kology expressed concerns about the materials used on the roof.
“What kind of, you know, there were materials up there that could ignite?” said Kology. “Are you still there? Will you completely remove them? I mean, hopefully you have a follow -up examination. ”
Despite the disorder, the parents estimated the quick reaction of the firefighters.
“This is incredible. I am so happy to hear that it was released so quickly, ”said Kology.
Students like Ezra Coy adapt to the temporary shift of classes, and there are no timeline when repairs are complete.
“We just sat and waited until the second period,” said Coy.
Fort Myers's fire chief, Tracy McMillion, explained that roofs like the tar and other flammable components in the gym.
The school district assured that the students will only return to the gym if it is considered safe.
The school community is still hopeful for a quick solution, certainly as a top priority.
