Habitat for Humanity's ReStore is going all out for the holiday season

TWIN FALLS, Idaho – As the primary source of donations for Habitat for Humanity of the Magic Valley, the ReStore offers discounted building materials and household goods year-round. The Building Materials Thrift Store offers materials for construction and remodeling projects, typically at 30-50% off retail prices.

  • With Lights of Hope, shoppers can browse the glow of thousands of Christmas lights at the ReStore Monday through Friday evenings from 5 to 6 p.m. through December 23rd.
  • The Christmas tree auction gives people the opportunity to bid on a fully decorated artificial tree, raising funds while saving money on the cost of a new tree.
  • Proceeds from the ReStore this year will be enough to fully fund a home for a family in need while preventing 7 million pounds of materials from ending up in landfills.

“It was a light fixture in a restaurant, so we turned it upside down and turned it into a fountain,” Thomas Ameral told me.

Ameral is in the process of redesigning his backyard, reusing materials he found at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Twin Falls.

“So we also took in their chandeliers and put in solar lights so it would look like they were lit at night,” Ameral said. “It actually really brightens up the garden. It looks great.”

Even at such a price, buyers like Ameral keep coming back to convince people.

“It’s a friendship,” Ameral said. “And the fact that you know we help people in the community who are less fortunate by building homes and doing the things that they do here is an absolute blessing.”

“We have so many repeat customers here from our local community who really come here for good options for their building projects,” said Matt Herron, ReStore assistant manager.

“We are the primary source of funding for Habitat for Humanity,” Herron said. “This store will fully fund the construction of another home for a family in need in our community this year.”

The ReStore has also diverted more than 7 million pounds of material from the local landfill.

“If you have projects, stop here first. Because if you get brand new windows, check to see if we have the window size and it will be a lot cheaper,” Herron said.

To add to the Christmas spirit, shoppers can enjoy an hour of Christmas light bargain hunting every evening from 5pm to 6pm before closing time, Monday to Friday until the 23rd.

There are also two stations for family photos and hot cocoa is served on Fridays.

The Pre-Decorated Unique Christmas Tree Auction is back this year, offering another way to save on decorations while getting into the holiday spirit – by bidding on them on Friday, December 6th.

“You can come here and look around and see what you can change,” Ameral said. “Something that didn’t end up in the landfill and turned it into something cool.”
