Hanover begins pressure restoration; The boil water advisory continues east of I-95

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. – Hanover County officials provided an update Wednesday afternoon as some residents continue to experience low or no water pressure in their homes.

The county issued a boil water warning for areas east of I-95 on Tuesday afternoon after the transition to an alternative water supply from Richmond's water resulted in low pressure and interruptions. Residents across the county continue to be encouraged to conserve water.

Hanover is starting to see some “water flowing back into our system.”

When will water be back in Hanover County?

Hanover County Public Utilities Director Matt Longshore said Richmond is repressurizing its system and continuing to fill Byrd Park Reservoir, bringing “more of its pressure zones online.”

“So what that means for Hanover is that we're starting to see some benefits as they put pressure on their system,” Longshore said. “Some of the water they put through the reservoir is now going to Hanover, and we have begun restoring pressure in the Mechanicsville area.”

However, officials acknowledged that the “process will take some time” as pipelines, storage tanks and other infrastructure are filled.

“We are confident we will be able to increase system pressure again in the Mechanicsville area, hopefully tomorrow morning into late tomorrow (Thursday). So we're back to the beginning of the process, but we're starting to see some water flowing back into our system, and residents are starting to see some of it in their homes in the Mechanicsville area.”

Officials emphasized that a boil water advisory will remain in effect for residents east of Interstate 95 “for the foreseeable days as we begin to bring system pressures back to normal.”

“We will be conducting numerous tests throughout the system after system pressure is fully restored,” Longshore said. “We are still urging residents to conserve water as service is gradually restored in their area.”
