President Micheal D. Higgins has returned to Áras an Uachtaráin after brief treatment for an infection.

The president spent two nights in the hospital

A statement from Áras to Uachtaráin said: President Higgins traveled to St James Hospital by appointment on Sunday to be examined for the localized infection. The president was then given a course of antibiotics that successfully treated the problem.

President Higgins would like to express his gratitude to the medical staff who treated him and to all members of the public who sent him their best wishes during his short hospital stay.

Áras an Uachtaráin in Dublin's Phoenix Park will be the President's official residence until November 10. His successor, Catherine Connolly, will be inaugurated the next day.
