A lush green lawn is often seen as a sign of a well-maintained home, but a newly landscaped garden can be a more environmentally friendly and sensible use of outdoor space. An amateur gardener recently shared his garden makeover on Reddit, going from a useless, plain lawn to a vibrant, pollinator-friendly native garden.
The homeowner shared the stunning before-and-after photos of his newly redesigned yard on an anti-lawn subreddit. Before the renovation, the lawn was a relatively small, useless patch of green grass. Now the garden is filled with pollinator-friendly plants, nourishing mulch, and a decorative, path-like feature for the area's downspout.
Despite being on slightly sloping terrain, the home gardener said his new native garden had withstood local weather conditions well, including heavy rainfall.
βThis is beautifully done!β One commenter wrote about the transformed yard.
“Really a great place for a flower garden and not only are there pretty flowers in your garden, you've thought about it,” another commenter added.
Another asked: βIt looks good! Just a question: Is there a reason why you didn't want to use the downspout and turn it into a rain garden?” The original poster replied that they hadn't considered that option but would keep it in mind for the future.
Native gardening is not just an aesthetic choice. It's a significant step towards restoring balance to the environment – proof that even small gardens can make a big difference.
Natural grasslands have long disappeared due to agricultural growth, urban development, climate change and human intervention. To help revitalize their local areas, home gardeners are turning to native plants to support pollinators and their local ecosystem.
But the benefits of planting native flowers and greenery don't stop there. Planting native plants can help save money and time on garden maintenance. Not only do native plants withstand local weather conditions better, but the U.S. Forest Service says home gardening can help reduce air pollution. That's a lot of work for a small garden.
