The key ingredients behind the transformation?

There is a rain garden that can filter pollutants from runoff and support pollinators, the Environmental Protection Agency noted. There is also a permeable walkway that can reduce runoff and a collection of native plants that have sprouted.

“Absolutely lovely! Well done!” noted one commenter.

The results speak for themselves – and the growing movement toward environmentally friendly lawn alternatives. ABC11 shared that more homeowners are transforming their properties by opting for native plants to make them more environmentally friendly.

Lawns in the U.S. cover 40 million acres, and combined the total area is the size of Colorado, the National Wildlife Federation reported. They use about 9 billion gallons of water every day.

Lawns with native plants are not only good for the planet, but they also benefit homeowners.

According to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, homeowners on traditional lawns use up to ten times more chemical pesticides than farmers do per acre on their crops. These chemicals can enter water bodies, be transported through the air or deposited in the ground.

By replacing monoculture grass with native plants, homeowners can reduce water consumption and chemical fertilizer use. This saves money on lawn care while creating a habitat that attracts pollinators and local wildlife.

Gardens with native plants and clover or buffalo grass lawns also require far less mowing, watering and maintenance. And because native plants absorb and store harmful carbon pollution, they can help improve air quality.

“This is beautiful. You did a great job designing a garden that still looks so established after just 2.5 years,” one Reddit user wrote.

Another asked: “I love these natives! Is this Royal Catchfly or Cardinal Flower?”

“Yes, Lobelia cardinalis,” the original poster replied.
