Houston, TX – There is more than just four walls at home – it is where love, memories and family come together.
For a grandmother in Houston, the idea of a “home” had become a daily fight. That means until an extraordinary act of friendliness turned things and brings hope and renewal.
Something special is happening in the Houston Home & Garden Show this year. Mrs. Batres, a resilient grandmother who had unimaginable difficulties, receives a gift that she had never expected – a beautifully furnished guest room that can be returned by the American furniture warehouse and the mission of the show.
With 66, Ms. Batre's incredible challenges met. In 2020 she lost her 44-year-old husband against Covid-19. Suddenly she had to manage her aging at home alone – a home that couldn't sit dangerously. The roof was integrated, the bathroom floor was exposed and there was no heating or cooling.
In addition, she is the full -time supervisor of her son Deutsch Batres, who faces her with several health challenges, including amputation, diabetes and visual loss. With everything it has remained strong, but life was anything but easy.
“She was a saint because I will not say that I am the most difficult person I can do with, but it's not. I'm not the easiest either. She sets a lot with a lot, ”reflects German and shows his appreciation for her strength and patience.
“In these times when, as you know, a kind of goal. I didn't know what to do, but she kept me tomorrow, a better day, ”he added.
A dream converted at home fulfilled a dream
In view of the urgent need, the Department of Housmung and Community Development Department of the City of Houston entered through its home repair program and offers a complete conversion of homes. Ms. Batres is one of 297 home owners who have benefited from this life -changing initiative.
“This project absolutely means the world that we can give and create a community. This helps to revive our housing stocks and offer affordable apartments all over the city, ”said Cedrick Lasane, deputy director of family operations for the city of Houston.
“The city of Houston always has it [come] together. Help is in humans. There is no doubt that this is the largest city in the world, ”said German.
When the house was rebuilt, additional considerations for ADA accessibility were made due to the health challenges of the German relative.
“While we let the process of reconstruction of this house through, German had some complications that led to his leg amputated. We looked at how to create more AdA accessibility. The Houston Home and Garden Show entered and we also wanted to do some additional things, ”said Cedrick Lasane.
When she saw her newly designed dining room for the first time, her reaction was simple, but full of emotions: “It was beautiful.”
While the converted house gave her a fresh start, something was still missing – an inviting room for family and friends.
Here the Houston Home & Garden Show and the American furniture store came into play. Together they developed and delivered a cozy guest room to create a room full of warmth and love.
“People just think that we come under a roof for a great show for a weekend. But they are really very, very big in returning the community. And you know Houston is proud of Houston, right? So we are just about paying it in our community, ”said Dee Brown from the Houston Home and Garden Show.
“The show itself, we bring in the professionals to talk to them about what to do in their home. But we actually came home in someone to show him what we could do for you by bringing in our people to achieve this, ”added Dee Brown.
Grateful for a new beginning
Ms. Batres expressed deep appreciation for the generosity of those who contributed: “I am grateful for the help of everyone. I would like to thank everyone who has physically or financially contributed to creating the room. “
She also informed how much this transformation had affected her daily life: “I am very grateful. Thanks [to] The city of Houston … you helped [and] Fix the problems we had. And it just makes my life much easier. “
Cedrick Lasane also emphasized how other homeowners can access similar resources: “Every year we receive a means and have a pool of applicants that we work. Homeowners can visit our website in Houston.gov/Housing to apply for our program and receive help. All of our programs are aimed at households with low to moderate income. “
A room that you can enjoy over the years
When asked what she is most looking forward to, Mrs. Batres joked that the guest room may not stay a guest room for long: “I want to take it over for myself.”
