The German Engineering Bureau Dürr Systems has expanded its portfolio of two-sided simultaneous electrode coating machines with a new coater that uses Siemens technologies to support the functions of the heavily controlled coating functions.

The company's product is tailored to the requirements of customers for a complete electrode coating process, which supports the integrated solvent restoration and refining on site as well as state-of-the-art roll presses, said CTS sales director Jim Hartnett.

Dürr also offers Tandem coaches with integrated solvent recovery. The Dürr team evaluates customers to recommend either tandem or simultaneous two -sided coating machines to support their goals.

“During the tandem coater, the preferred funds in the industry for the production of batteries and still a practical OEM option for our customers with many years in the life cycle and our technical know-how from him, in order to offer our customers a further way to increase and expand their production, still a sustainable OEM option.” Our F&E team was working fully to deal with the architecture of our system, with Greater precision, quality, efficiency and sustainability as design points. “

The Dürr Gigacater has a straight path product flow on a single coating station. A slot-the-layer coating is immediately followed on a backing role to coat both sides of the current collector in a pass. An air flotation dryer enables a simultaneous two -sided coating because the film goes through a non -contact drying process.

Dürr chose the Siemens partner and system integrator DMC to help with automation and controls, in particular the movement control.

The automation and control system of the gigacater contains numerous Siemens components from the TIA portfolio (Comanat Integrated Automation). This includes the SIMATIC S7-1500 Progamptable Logic Controllers (PLCS), which outperform the two-sided simultaneous coating processes to precisely manage the movement, alignment and timing of numerous servom motors when the copper foil substrate moves through the machine and its swimmer-drive module.

The SIMATIC HMI TP900 comfort plates offer the operators a diagonal touchscreen with nine inches to manage all steps in the coating and drying methods with complete visibility. And the Sinamics S120 drives offer integrated safety, energy savings and network connectivity for a variety of performance reviews.

The Siemens SIMATIC WinCC Unified System for HMI and SCADA programming acts as an integration platform to link data from the production with the IT -enterprise systems of a customer.

David Ventola, the director for business development of Dürr, sees the two-sided simultaneous electrode coating functions as a player for EV battery production. “It eliminates the annoying problem of the EDGE curl with its Float drying process, which at the same time balances both sides of the electrode the forces of both sides. Even with high coating weights, there are no edge bikes. This can significantly improve the yields to increase the production results.”

The precise coating functions of the gigacoater machine can help to ensure that the battery cell-oem customer of Dürr achieves high-quality yields and at the same time lowers waste, labor and energy costs and saves the space for systems.

“In cooperation with our customers -enengineering teams, we would like to use demanding 3D simulations in order to optimize all of these systems and save capex and then simulate the complete production processes to reduce their Opex even more,” said Ventola. “Finally, we imagine that our customers can use AI to monitor the production of end-to-end and alarms in process anomalies so that they can examine and prevent expensive disorders.”
