Columbus, ind. – – Louis Joyner Architect was recognized with a prestigious conservation award for the comprehensive restoration of the legendary bell tower in the First Christian Church in Columbus.
The award underlines the company's commitment to preserve the architectural heritage of this national historical landmark, which was originally designed by the father-son duo Eliel and Eero Saarinen and completed in 1942.
The first Christian church was the first modernist structure in Columbus and provided the stage for the city's reputation as a hub for world-class architecture. The 166-foot tower, a characteristic of the city's skyline, has continuously maintained because the cracks were first observed in 1945. According to an assessment of 2019, a complete restoration was considered necessary in order to stabilize the structure and to clear up many years of concerns about movement and water infiltration.
The award underlines the importance of the preservation of modernist sights and the effects of community efforts. Thanks to the inauguration of the project team and the generosity of the financing partners, the first Christian church tower is strong and will ensure its place in Columbus' Skyline for a long time.
The 3 -million dollar project was made possible by strong support from the community, the community and the grants from Partners for Sacred Places, the National Park Service and the Jef haven Family Foundation. The Heritage Fund and the Landmark Columbus Foundation were instrumental in the public relations of the municipality for the support of the community.
