Local non -profit organization offers a new approach for sober life for shelter residents

Fresno, California (KFSN) – This eccentrically shaped tiny at home is not the latest architecture climb.

It is one of four environmentally friendly tiny houses built for the improper people in the center of Fresno.

Beverly Barns is one of 12 people in this community who plays in the middle of a garden.

“I lived on the street for about a year before I moved here. I was lonely and so, you know it is difficult to be on the street,” said Barns.

Barns says that she has lived in this community for more than 10 years.

And she says that Dakota Eco Gardens helped her build more than just a home.

“It has changed my way of thinking and the way I see myself. I hope that other people who come here will gain this experience and climb off the street,” said Barns.

Dakota Eco Gardens is the non -profit organization that supports a sober living environment for Unhaures.

The organization says that the tiny houses that are built are financed privately by Community donations.

But it takes more than money to keep this non -profit organization alive.

“Recently we had many students from the state of Fresno, they did an enormous amount of work to build this house. They have their own time as a service for the community,” says Caryn Kochergen with Dakota Eco Garden.

Kochergen says that the residents can usually live in the community for a year where they are responsible for maintaining the garden and the site.

She says that during this time the hope is that the person who uses the room will be able to get to the feet.

“We will never solve homelessness. We will never solve the problem,” says Kochergen. “If people say that we will solve homelessness, it won't happen because we will always have our homeless people. But if we can help 10 a year or something, we have done our job.”
