Longing for a sustainable Christmas

With the capital proud to be the UK's greenest city, Londoners are always looking for the best ways to live sustainably.

Pines and Needles has revealed its top tips to ensure your holiday season stays as green as your tree.

Veronika Kusak, e-commerce director at Pines and Needles, said: “We believe Christmas should be magical and sustainable.”

Here's how you can start making this your greenest Christmas yet.

The first step is to get a real Christmas tree.

Aside from the very real benefit of making your home smell like a dream, real trees use fewer raw materials and energy than artificial trees, produce fewer CO₂ emissions and are fully recyclable and biodegradable.

If this is your first Christmas with a Nordmann, Fraser or Noble fir, it's important to know how to care for your tree so that it will last you well into the new year.

Kusak said: “With real trees, it's worth giving them some time to acclimatise once they're home. It can take a few hours to overnight for the branches to relax in their new surroundings.”

Once you've set up your tree, you can decorate it with eco-friendly ornaments made from natural materials like wood or paper.

This is a great time to create new holiday traditions, like spending an evening watching Christmas movies and making paper chains and paper snowflakes.

Kusak said decorating your tree will help the branches set more quickly.

If arts and crafts aren't your thing, you can invest in Pines and Needles' own decor range.

You can then reuse these ornaments next year, creating a meaningful and unique decor collection over the years and curbing impulse purchases of low-quality plastic baubles that may end up in landfills.

If you dispose of your tree responsibly in the new year, you can use it as mulch for parks and trails or as biofuel.

Pines and Needles offers a collection that will save you from adding “getting rid of that withered Christmas tree” to your list of things to do in the new year.

Most London councils also offer a Christmas tree collection service.

It's not too late to boost conscious Christmas consumption.
