Mid-Michigan roofing and siding company gives family a new roof

FLUSHING, Mich. (WNEM) – A local roofing and siding company in Genesee County is helping a family start the new year off right.

Each year, Flint-based Guns N' Hoses Roofing selects someone in need to give them a brand new roof – free of charge.

This year her winner was Emily Farrell of Flushing. She said she and her husband were overjoyed and extremely grateful to receive the free work on their home.

“We have a 132-year-old house and we knew we had to do all these repairs and that it would cost a lot of money,” Farrell said. “We're now at the point where we're having leaks upstairs, and from a safety perspective, it's just an unreal blessing for our family.”

The company began accepting applications in December and selected a winner using a random lottery. Guns N' Hoses' Cody Fowler says his team loves the opportunity to give back, especially at their next home base.

“This is very important to us,” Fowler said. “We love giving back to the community, we love being a part of the community, especially Flushing. That’s where our main office will be, so it was really cool to give back to someone in Flushing.”

Because Farrell's home is more than a century old, he adds that it is even more important to care for it to preserve the area's history.

“This is kind of a landmark here in Flushing, it's an older, historic home and it's going to be here for a long time,” Fowler said. “It’s been around for a long time, so we’re excited to be able to help her.”

Farrell said she knows buying a historic home comes with challenges and her family appreciates any help they can get, especially in the winter.

“There's so much character and this movie is really about bringing that character back into the picture and really slowly bringing him to life,” Farrell said. “It's going to be a long time before we work on the internal things, and then we'll work on the external things too, and that's a big start.” I mean, we couldn't have done this for years. Cody told us that many of these guys are here on a volunteer basis and we are overwhelmed with gratitude. I can’t believe they’re out there in 15 degrees and doing this for us.”

The company plans to hold another contest next year around the holidays.
