National transition to the new national emergency reaction system

The Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance (TDCI) and the Tennessee State Fire Marshal's Office (SFMO) today state that the fire department from Tennessee begins the transition to the National Emergency Response Information System (Neris)-a secure platform based on cloud, which is reported and analyzed to modernize the emergency company.

Neris replaces the 40-year-old National Fire Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) to offer local agencies timely data tools, location-based analyzes and flexible options for reporting on incidents-free of charge for the departments. NFIRS will be officially closed on January 1, 2026.

“As State Fire Marshal from Tennessee, I am trying to help our state's fire brigades and rescue workers get the instruments they need to protect their communities, to manage their resources effectively and make decisions through current data,” said TDCI Commissioner and State Firefighters Carter Lawrence. “The introduction of Neris is a critical step to further strengthen the public security of Tennessee. I ask all Tennessee fire chiefs to start the important transitional process to Neris as soon as possible.”

Tennessee is part of the region 4 of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (Fema), which also includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina. The departments in the region are accommodated as part of a gradual national rollout, which is housed by the US fire brigade administration (USFA), the management for science and technology (DHS S&T) and the fire protection research institute (FSRI), part of the UL research institutes.

The most important characteristics of Neris include:

  • Zero-cost access for all public fire and EMS agencies.
  • Local databases, the departments are completely in control of their records.
  • GIS-based reporting for location-specific knowledge and planning.
  • Action capable of dashboards for surgical awareness and performance tracking.
  • Strom line frame with help desk support and training tools.
  • The departments can start today with the onboarding process by visiting the Neris website.
  • If necessary, the process includes the integration of account setup, administrator Access and Record Management System (RMS).

“Neris is especially for today's fire brigade,” said Steve Kerber, Managing Director of FSRI. “It is based on research and feedback from the field and provides implementable information that improve the emergency reaction and support long -term planning and resources at local, state and national level.”

The SFMO encourages all departments to complete the onboarding as soon as possible in order to ensure a smooth transition.
