Officials celebrate the completion of the decisive project in the beloved river: "The islands disappeared"

In cooperation with the city of Toledo, the port authority of Toledo-Lucas County led a project to restore Clark Island and Delaware/Horseshoe Islands in the Maumee River of Ohio, as the Blade reports.

“The islands disappeared,” said Mary Mertz, director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The department contributed 8 million US dollars to the project.

The islands had experienced considerable erosion in recent decades and lost a lot of land mass. The restoring restoration of 63 hectares of US dollars of 13.5 million US dollars is the largest project to restore wild animals that has ever been carried out in the Maumee River. The islands were rebuilt and fastened, and a plan was created to prevent erosion in the future.

The project also included the inclusion of 200,000 local plants, 1,200 trees and other habitats. These elements support the local ecosystem. Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said that the islands in the past have no priority. “We did not exist the love and care that it deserves,” he said.

The restoration was carried out to improve the health of the river, the lake and the community as well as the habitats of fish and wild animals. It will help make the water cleaner for the residents of Ohio, as the restored islands catch water and remove sediment.

The islands also offer visitors relaxation because one of the projects was to connect between humans and nature. Mertz said that as soon as people experience the islands, “they touch, live, their hand in the water, see the wildlife -that (they) fall in love with them and they want to preserve them for the future.”

Mayor Kapukiewicz summarized: “What makes this project so exciting is that this is finally a commitment to our largest resource – our water, our lake and river.”
