OMRO, Wis. (WBAY) – An Omro man who spent more than 13 months trying to get his roof repaired after receiving a recall notice from Champion Homes is now having to witness those repairs being made.
This comes after he contacted Action 2 News last week and said he was becoming increasingly frustrated after the roof began leaking in two different locations.
It was just after 8 a.m. Wednesday when Michael Manders said work on his roof had begun.
After it started leaking, it was previously covered with a tarpaulin. That's when he called Action 2 News.
Manders says he spoke to a Champion Homes builder on the phone last week, just hours after we left his house.
“I was amazed, really amazed, because after waiting so long I didn't know whether I would hear anything or not. It happened so quickly, I couldn't believe it,” says Manders.
It all started last September when Manders received a recall notice in the mail from the company saying his roof may have a defect.
This recall applies to all homes built at the company's Topeka, Indiana facility between 2016 and 2020.
Manders filled out the paperwork, got an inspection, but then never heard back, so he contacted us, which he says also made a difference.
“They took the bottom three feet of the roof down to the rafters and replaced all the wood that was broken. They put the vapor barrier in place and then put the new shingles back in,” Manders says.
Manders said repairing the roof was a big relief, especially with winter just around the corner. He no longer has to worry about the first snowfall.
“I would like to say a big thank you to you and Channel 2 for broadcasting our story and I think that was a big part of our success in bringing this project to fruition,” says Manders.
Champion Homes did not respond to us seeking comment for the story or publicly disclose how many homes sold across the country may be affected by this recall.
