One pet died, three were rescued in a house fire in Edgerton

EDGERTON, Wis. (WKOW) – Lakeside Fire-Rescue and Edgerton police responded to a house fire Saturday evening after a passerby reported flames coming from a home on West Fulton Street.

The emergency services were dispatched around 8:14 p.m. and were on site in less than five minutes. Firefighters found flames coming through the roof at the back of the two-story home.

No one was home when the fire broke out. Crews were able to bring the fire under control in about 23 minutes, although the flames had already spread to multiple areas of the home and attic.

The residents had left the house around 5 p.m. and investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen sometime after 7 p.m. The cause is still under investigation but is not considered suspicious. Officials said the trigger may have been a family pet.

There were two dogs and two cats in the house. Firefighters rescued both dogs and a cat, all of which were treated for smoke inhalation. A second cat died before emergency services arrived.

Firefighters cleared the scene around 11 p.m., but a smaller group remained on fire watch overnight. The house remained uninhabitable, but the family stayed with relatives in the area.
