The Petersburg County Assembly will decide at its Jan. 21 meeting whether the district can issue bonds to fund improvements to its public school facilities.

Approval of the bonds would allow the district to take on up to $3.5 million in debt — which it would repay through property tax increases. Until the bonds are paid off, county property owners' annual taxes could rise by about $62 per $100,000 of assessed property value.

Proceeds from the bonds would fund major maintenance and improvement projects for the Petersburg school district, including safety improvements and roof repairs. The school's maintenance department had previously reported leaks in the auditorium and holes in the roof, with other areas falling into disrepair due to age and weather damage.

While the state will pay for about two-thirds of the roofing project, the remaining nearly $1.5 million would be funded through the proposed bonds. The money would also be used to electrify security doors to automatically lock the school office and convert it for better visibility.

The bond issue was already approved by Petersburg voters in the October 2024 local elections. Since then, Assembly members have unanimously approved the bond authorization ordinance twice and are expected to take the third and final vote on it at their next meeting.

The Petersburg District Assembly will meet on January 21 at 6:00 p.m. in the Assembly Rooms. KFSK will broadcast this meeting live and post the recording in our Borough Assembly Archives.
