The Ministry of planning has published guidelines to support real estate owners in repairs according to the hurricane Imelda.
A government spokesman said: “The Ministry of Planning recognizes the urgency of repairing storm damage after the hurricane Imelda and is committed to supporting real estate owners during the process. Technical civil servants are available to ensure instructions and support.
Repairs on buildings
- Repairs with the same materials and the same design [e.g., windows, doors, or roof slate] Do not require a building permit or a building permit if the damage is limited to non -structural problems. The owners can continue these repairs immediately.
- If structural damage has occurred, a building permit is required before the work can begin. These applications are prioritized and processed as soon as possible. In the event of dangerous structural damage, the emergency room can be present without permission if the department is notified, and then an application for permission is submitted.
- Under class IV of development and planning [General Development] Order 1999 a permissible development permit for storm or fire damage can be used if no more than 60% of a building/structure has been destroyed and the replacement is no greater than the original building/structure.
Repairs on listed buildings and historical protected areas
- For non -structural repairs with identical materials and constructions [e.g., doors, windows, or roof slate]No permission is required.
- All structural repairs require a building permit, but these applications are accelerated.
- The materials must replicate the style and details of the original structure.
Repairs on sea walls and docks
- The replacement usually only requires a building permit to ensure compliance with the 1998 Bermuda building code.
- In some cases, a building permit may also be necessary in some cases. Real estate owners are asked to consult the department before starting repairs.
