MESA would like to provide 16.8 million US dollars for the construction of a changing room for women and A Performance-hit and pitching laboratory in the Sloan Park-the Spring Training Home for the Chicago Cubs.
The construction contract for Ma Mortenson Co. is on Monday, February 24th, on the Council agenda.
Mortenson, which was considered the most qualified among the six offers last year, received a contract for preparatory services in June, which included the preparation of the cost estimates and the development of the project plan.
According to a personnel report, the CUBs and other baseball teams of the Major League increased the number of women employees because the baseball complex was opened in 2014. Sloan Park currently has only changing rooms for team players and coaching team for men.
The proposed construction of an 18,000 square meter building with the necessary infrastructure on site in the training center would enable the use of specialized technologies by the team.
The personnel report pointed out that MLB teams “currently use or add modern movement technology to analyze and improve pitching and dough power”.
And so that the Cubs have to remain competitive, the team must add this technology to the training regiment, according to the employees and pointed out that the Sloan Park is designed for traditional pitching and impact practices.
While Mesa is responsible for the construction and construction of operating systems for the laboratory and changing room, the CUBs cover the costs for the devices, furniture and equipment.
The city expects the project to last longer than a year as soon as it runs. The public was expected to expect minimal disruption to the public during the construction.
The city built and has the 140 hectare complex with 15,000 seats. In 2010, voters with a margin of 63% approved a ballot with which Mesa progresses with the construction of a new spring training system for the Cubs.
The Cubs have trained and generated tax revenue for the city since 1952. According to an audit from 2015 in 2015, there was 116.5 million US dollars for the Sloan Park project in 2015 not to go to Florida Mesa.
A total of 241,215 fans crossed the goals of Sloan Park last year, which, according to Mesa, was an average of 13,401 fans in each of the 18 games played. In 2024, the Cubs headed participation in the Cactus League.
Although the economic effects of spring training are not accommodated by the baseball stadium or the city, a study by Arizona State University reported that the 2023.5 million US dollar season pumped into the state's gross domestic product and a total of 710 million dollars of the total Economic activity or gross production generated.
In return for the use of the facility, the CUBs pay the rent for the city market and, according to the 2011 furnishing agreement, are responsible for maintaining and repairing the stadium and team facilities.
Mesa can also use the stadium at least five and up to 10 city events. The conditions of the agreement sunset on the 10th day after the last day of the 50th spring training period after the beginning of 2011
The agreement includes a time frame for certain capital improvements such as playing lawn replacement, stadium lighting and HLK systems.
In addition to the submission of every year, Mesa received over 7 million US dollars from the Arizona Sport and Tourism Authority for the planned projects every year to use improvements, said Heirshberg.
Heirshberg found that over the years, the Cubs invested over 11 million US dollars in capital improvement projects in the facility, to which the expansion of the team business, the implementation of improvements on the roof.
The city also has an interior user contract with athletics, which trains in Fitch Park and withstands its exhibition games in the Hohokam stage.
Heirshberg said that the city is currently negotiating with the West Sacramento team, California, “about the full extent of the planned improvements” for Fitch and Hohokam.
The Fitch Park is less than 1 mile south of Hohokam.
Mesa is the only community of Arizona with two spring training facilities. The Cactus League season is underway in the valley and 15 teams play in 10 stadiums until March 25th.
When the CUBs end their spring training season, the Sloan Park organizes a number of other events, including concerts, sports and theater in the facility.
