A Reddit user's parents had a conflict with their homeowners association and updated the community on r/ProRevenge with all the details.
Her parents had to replace their roof after a storm. They chose a metal roof because it would be more energy efficient. Finally, a metal roof can passively reflect solar heat. However, the homeowners' association had to pay for the property damage itself. Therefore, the HOA tried to impose fines wherever it could.
After the HOA dodged permit applications for months, the parents went ahead and started construction anyway. They had concerns about a 1989 bylaw that banned metal roofs in the township, but concluded it only applied to older designs. After the roof was built, the HOA stepped in and attempted to impose a $25,000 fine based on this bylaw and ordered the roof removed.
Luckily, the homeowners received advice from their contractors on how to solve the problem. Florida state law superseded HOA bylaws when it came to green home upgrades that would allow metal roof retention. The couple made this argument and legal precedent at an HOA meeting, which the board reluctantly accepted. But that wasn't the only thing on the homeowners' agenda.
“HOA head growls, 'is that all?'” the original poster wrote. “Mom turns the sweetness up to 11. 'No. I see in that one.' [bylaws] that we can vote at every HOA meeting to impeach board members and elect their successors. I request that you all be indicted. I'm nominating my husband and…” She rattles off a list of names. HOA is stunned.
This scenario shows that it is possible to beat the HOA, especially when it comes to implementing sustainable housing improvements.

Destructive weather events are increasing in frequency and intensity. After such events, homeowners must rebuild with the resilience necessary to withstand this ongoing trend. These upgrades must also reduce residential energy pollution to mitigate weather conditions at their source.
The Reddit community was thrilled with the sweet justice that Florida homeowners were able to mete out.
“Small print gets you every time,” wrote one community member.
“As a former president of an HOA, I am absolutely thrilled that your parents did this and got these idiots removed from the board. I am very glad that these people were exposed for who they were,” another replied.
