Staten Island, NY-Seit decades, the Billiou Stillwell-Perine-Haus, one of the oldest houses in New York City and the state and the only remaining architectural evidence for the first permanent settlement of Staten Island. The New York landmark was broken through both age as well as the elements, floor beams and ceiling rays and is bound and never really repaired. But thanks to a recent funding thrust, the charming Dutch farmhouse will soon bring to life again in the colonial era.

“I can really see what this project will be, and I am really proud to be here today to announce $ 500,000 in funds for this beautiful home,” said Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton on Thursday morning at a press conference within historical property. “This is one of the most remarkable architectural parts on Staten Island. It is over 360 years old and is still – which is proof of the care and commitment of those who have worked so hard to keep it.”
Skracella-Spanton added: “The Perine House not only tells the history of great historical moments, but also talks the stories of the everyday state of Islanders, families who lived here and built their lives.”
“It is my honor and my privilege, the oldest house on Staten Island to Steward, one of the five oldest houses in the state of New York,” said Jessica Phillips, CEO of Historic Richmond Town. “This house has been at this point, which is not important for Staten Island's entirety and the stories that this house can tell. They are important for the nation. And this house deserves to stand here for three centuries that tell these stories. Thanks to the amazing generosity of our state of the state, it will continue to tell these stories for generations.”
Brian Laline, Executive Editor of Staten Island Advance/Silive.com, praised the efforts of the contractor and community activist Steven Labaido, who has been working for the restoration of the property for decades.
“This type loves this place, he loves Staten Island,” said Laline. “His passion for this project … He was relentlessly to urge us to achieve this. He had a vision and recognized the value of the history of this place – not only for Staten Island, but for the nation.”
Labaido, brother of Scott, the well -known activist and painter of Staten Island, was awarded a special gingerbread course at the press conference and described by Phillips as “Duke of Perine”.
“I want to thank everyone here,” he said. “Hopefully we helped the Perine House to stay alive for another 300 years.”
The building, which is called Billiou Still-Perine House in honor of three prominent families in Staten Island, is located on Richmond Road 1476 and consists of several different partial residence, which was born in 1663 by Pierre Billiou, born in French Flanders, which expanded here in 1661 and three adjoining.
The building was described in 1967 as the official landmark of New York City and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
The efforts to repair and collect the house for its restoration continued: in 2013, historical Richmond Town collected with the help of the Richmond County Savings Foundation and the State Island Advance donations for a new roof.
In 2017, an extensive research report for historical structures was created in which the repairs are listed that are necessary to keep this piece of the history of Staten Island alive.
“The Billiou-Stillwell-Perine house has the potential to serve as an educational environment for thousands of schoolchildren every year and to serve the general public,” says the document created by Ayres Cowley Architecture, LLC over 100 pages for the Staten Island Historical Society. “Students who study colonial life, the American Revolution and the early years of the Republic can gain a stronger understanding of life during this time by visiting a house in which status of Islanders represent a variety of backgrounds and living documents …”
And that is exactly what Phillips intends to use this financing.
“This house needs and deserves this restoration,” she said. “The property must be preserved properly so that its history can live on generations.”
