Then and Now: Christmas Lights on Great Barrington's Main Street

The festive lights of the holiday season have illuminated Main Street in Great Barrington for many years. The vintage photo shown above was taken in the late 1930s looking north. A 1937 Pontiac can be seen in the right foreground.

In order to improve traffic flow and reduce the risk of accidents, people began switching from diagonal to parallel parking at the end of the 1950s. The pros and cons were considered and debated for over 15 years, but in 1972 the change was finally made.

The current view of the Main Street show below was taken on Christmas Eve.
